I don't know if you guys know this or not, but I've been reading a lot of poetry lately. At least, more than I ever had. You see when I was younger I always thought that poetry was boring, dull, and didn't have nearly enough stabbing. But I recently read my first collection of poetry, and well....

via GIPHY

Here are seven reasons why poetry is becoming a personal favorite of mine. :)

1.) The Lyrical Writing Style

I've recently found out that I'm a fan of more lyrical writing style, and poetry has a lot of that. Now, that's not to say that that all poets write like this, but I absolutely love it when they do. It's almost as if you can hear them speaking to you, conveying their message in a beautiful, powerful, and whimsical way. In fact, one of my favorite books of ever, Serenity by India R. Adams, has a very lyrical writing style. You could say that I'm a fan.

2.) The Messages

A lot of poetry often has deep meanings, even if they don't appear to, or if you just don't understand it yourself (which is totally okay). But I love rereading poems, and figuring out what the different metaphors, and intricate diction choices. Sometimes I fully relate to what the poet's message is, and sometimes I can't. However I've found that a lot of poets talk about really powerful themes like mental health and social justice, which are always fun and/or interesting to read. There's always just a wide range of messages and themes that a poem can hold, and I'm rambling but I just love uncovering all of them.

3.) The Speed

Okay, this one may seem a little superficial, but it's true nevertheless. I find it odd that I can get more out of a poem that took me thirty seconds to read then a book that took me a week to read. Don't get me wrong, I love my big books. It's just nice to be able to get a good emotional and fulfilling read from something that doesn't take up a ton of time.

4.) The Emotion that can be Conveyed

I feel like with a lot of poetry the emotions that authors want us to feel are just directly shot at our hearts, unlike in a full length novel where there's the plot and the character development and all of that fun stuff that can sometimes mask the emotional heart shots that authors throw at us. Again, there's nothing wrong with those novels (I mean, who doesn't love a good novel?), it's just nice to sometimes be pummeled to the ground with just five lines of poetry.

5.) The Connections we can Make

I found that it's easier (for me at least) to make emotional connections with the works of poets than with other different types of authors. I'm not sure why. Maybe it's because I'm better able to feel the emotions of the poets I read, or because I was able to read more of their work? I don't know, just something I discovered.

6.) The Variety
There are lots of different types of poetry, different styles of poetry, and many different ways to write poetry. Which is why it can be incredibly easy, and also incredibly difficult to find poetry you like. I find that some people will read a poem by one person, not like it, and then claim that the just don't like all of poetry. Which is odd. Would the same be said if the person had read a novel? The thing about poetry is that you have to find the styles that you enjoy, just like with books. I know that there are kinds of poems I just don't like (I've read them!), but does that mean I dislike all of poetry? Well, you're reading this so I guess you know the answer.

7.) The Diversity
I've also found that the world of poetry is very diverse, I might even dare to say more diverse than YA. The topics and situations that are discussed by poets are often more personal, and come from experiences that they themselves faced. So because of that you are bound to get a lot of diverse poems and experiences.

So what do you think? Are you a fan of poetry? If so, what collection of poems do I need to read? Let me know in the comments. 😁

My Life

As you may have guessed from the post title, I got my wisdom teeth out this week. It was time, they were growing in sideways, and honestly I just wanted to get it over with. So on Friday my mom (thanks mom) drove me to get all four of my wisdom teeth extracted. I was really great for the first hour after I woke up (mostly from still being wonky off of the drugs they gave me), and that's how we got gems like this...

On top of that I realized shortly after my mom got a call from the doctor that he used the long lasting numbing stuff on my mouth, meaning that I was not able to feel or properly move my mouth until one in the morning. To put that in perspective my appointment was at eleven in the morning. That was rough.

Other than that I don't really have much to report. I basically just stayed home for the Fourth of July and worked. Nothing too terribly exciting. However this week I gotta head back to the teaching hospital for another appointment. Only one this time, but still, gotta hate that drive. But, until next week, happy reading!

Synopsis: Engaged, abducted, and falling for a man accused of murder.

From
the outside, Kass has it all. She’s on the fast track to medical school
and newly engaged to the perfect guy, at least when he's sober. Beaten
down by his abuse, Kass turns to cutting, her success hanging on a
razor's edge.

She impulsively offers a handsome hitchhiker a
ride to the next town. Logan seems kind, charming and sexy as hell until
he pulls a weapon, forcing her to drive him across the country.

Logan
has no intention of hurting anyone. Falsely accused of his sister's
murder, he's on the run and in a race to find the true culprit.

As
law enforcement closes in, Kass and Logan forge a deep connection, and
Kass must choose between a past she's not even sure she wants anymore or
a future that may not outlast the hour.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">The bathroom door squeaked open, and she came out still holding a wet towel to her hair. Her complexion, now makeup-free, allowed the freckles on her nose cheeks to shine through. Although the mascara under her eyes had washed away, they were still dark with fatigue. Behind that, many years of emotional and physical turmoil.

“Where are we headed tomorrow?” she asked, sitting down on the edge of the second bed as she dried her damp brown hair. She smelled merely of shampoo and soap, but the way her wet hair fell in tendrils down her back, Logan had some strange urge to reach out and touch her freshly-washed skin, to run his thumb over her lips, touch her hair. Kiss her.

“You ask too many questions,” he said instead. He forced his gaze away, back to the darkness of the TV in front of him. On the other bed, Kass flopped onto her back, folding her hands over her stomach as she stared at the ceiling in silence.
“I’d ask less if you answered more,” she said.
“I told you, now is not the time.”

“Are you dangerous, Logan?” Kass sat up on the bed and looked at him. Her head tilted slightly to the side as she stared him down. Logan stared back, trying to keep his gaze from skimming over the soft curve of her neck. She was chewing her lip again, and the desperate desire he had to take her in his arms and ravish her was overwhelming. He blew a breath out to compose himself and looked away.
“Do you think I’m dangerous?”

Kass scoffed, but some hint of a tiny, annoyed smile appeared. It was gone before he could confirm that it was there. “I think you’re an idiot,” she said, and shrugged. “And I believe that you're trying to be scarier than you are. I believe you want me to be afraid of you because you’re scared of what will happen if you’re caught.”

“What makes you think that? What makes you think I’m more than just some jailbreak, homicidal maniac trying to escape from the police?”

“I don’t know.” Kass studied his face. Not for the first time, Logan felt oddly vulnerable under her steady gaze. “I guess I’m pretty familiar with bad people, Logan, and you just don’t seem like the bad guy you want to convince me that you are. Not to mention yourself.”

“I kidnapped you at gun point,” Logan reminded her. “I’m no good person, Kass.”
“Well, you haven’t raped me or tried to strangle me.” She paused, and this time it was her who couldn’t hold the gaze between them. After a moment of silence, she leaned forward, propping her elbows up on her thighs. The fresh scent of soap lingered on her skin, intoxicating.

“Tell me, Logan, who are you really?”
“I’m just a guy,” Logan said. “I’m a guy who has something that needs done, and you got involved without meaning to.”

Y'all I was tagged by the wonderful Anne over at The Reading Life to do the "All About Reading" Tag! You can check out her post and show her some love here. 😘

1.) What do you look for the most when you pick up a book?
a.) a beautiful writing style; b.) a character driven story; c.) a plot driven story
Is all of the above an answer? lol I think that of the three though a character driven story is what I like the most. Yes, having a good plot is important, but I will trudge through anything if I like the characters enough. But if I don't like the characters? Then it doesn't really matter how amazing the plot or writing is, I'm just not gonna like it as much.

2.) What are your pet peeves in books?
I actually don't have very many pet peeves regarding books. But my biggest is when abusive love interests are made out to be desirable lovers. Cause who doesn't love being told what to do 24/7 and being constantly stalked and yelled at just because you talked to a friend that just happened to be a guy? I know I do. 🙄

3.) If you could print one quote on your wall, which one would it be?
Oh damn this is a hard one. I'll pick one bookish one and one non-bookish one. Okay? A good bookish one is
"We'll just have to make better mistakes tomorrow."
-Alexandra Bracken, The Darkest Minds

And then a good non-bookish quote is actually a song lyric. I'm kinda a big fan of Twenty One Pilots, and a lot of their lyrics are quotes by themselves. However, one of my favorites right now is
"Some see a pen, I see a harpoon"
-Twenty One Pilots, Ode to Sleep

4.) Which genre would you like to explore more?
I should really read more graphic novels. I really like them, but I just don't know about a lot of good ones. So, if you have any recommendations for graphic novels let me know!

5.) Was there ever a movie adaptation you liked better than the book?
hahahahahahahahahahahahahhaahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah there's a reason the quote "Don't judge a book by its movie" was written.

6.) If one of your favorite books would be adapted or get a new adaptation, which book would it be and what role would you like to play?
Oh, I honestly don't know. Ummmmm, maybe Rain by India R. Adams. It's a really awesome fantasy series that's really unique and unlike anything I had read before. It would (hopefully) make a good movie. As for who I would want to play... I honestly don't know. Maybe someone who I won't name because they aren't introduced until book two. ;)

7.) A hyped book you wouldn't recommend at all?
Anything by Patrick Ness. I just can't get into his work. I have A Monster Calls checked out from the library, but I'm not expecting great things. I don't know, I've just never been able to get into his work. Though he is beloved by so many people it's actually kinda scary. 😅

8.) A book that highly influenced your life and way of thinking?
I don't think that there is one single book that has influenced my life and thinking. I like to think that each book can give me ideas or ways of viewing things, but I don't think that one book has impacted me that greatly.

9.) Are you a fan of rereading books? Do you do it often?
I love to reread books that I loved! I don't do it as often as I should, but I do have some plans for some rereads in the works. 😉

10.) Which book title could easily be the title of your life?
Oh this is such a cool question! I think that it really depends on how I'm feeling. Lately though I guess it would be My Heart and Other Black Holes by Jasmine Warga.

11.) Which book should be required reading for everyone?
I'm not one to shove books on people, but Serenity by India R. Adams is amazing and y'all should really read it.

12.) Who do you tag?
I'm tagging Greg over at Book Haven, Evelina over at AvalinahsBooks, and Lefty over at The Left-Handed Book Lover.

Hola. It's me. Long time no see. How's everyone doing? Good I'd hope (though one can never really tell nowadays). Yes, I have somehow managed to (partially) crawl out of the blogging slump/school induced panic I was/am in enough to come back! The spring semester has ended and all I gotta say about that is

Honestly this past year of school has been one of the worst I've ever had. Seriously. I was out sick for almost half of it. I honestly don't know how I finished my classes. Oh yeah, I didn't lmao. And that brings us here. I'm taking one class officially (which I actually really like), and I'm unofficially working on three others. Yeah, my summer is being taken up with school, which I actually kinda like. I like school and learning, and it's honestly been a nice summer. I have a couple weekend trips I might be taking in late July/early August, and so I'm basically just working my way through the summer until I get to go on those. It's a lot of work, so I'm busy. And yet I still find the time to have multiple mental breakdowns. 😂😂

I'm planning on doing some remodeling on the blog soon. I know that it feels like I'm constantly changing things around, but it's kinda what I do whenever I come back from a break. It might take me a bit to actually implement it on the blog, because (I'll give you a hint) I gotta do some painting first. ;)

Oh! I also got my privacy policy up! So you can check it out here if you'd like. :) And I just randomly signed up for Camp NaNoWrimo! I'm gonna get nothing written, but it's the thought that counts?

I guess that's all I have for you for right now. So, until you read whatever I write again, happy reading everybody! :)

Synopsis: "Speak up for yourself-we want to know what you have to say."

From the first moment of her freshman year at Merryweather High, Melinda knows this is a big fat lie, part of the nonsense of high school. She is friendless--an outcast--because she busted an end-of-summer party by calling the cops, so now nobody will talk to her, let alone listen to her. Through her work on an art project, she is finally able to face what really happened that night: She was raped by an upperclassman, a guy who still attends Merryweather and is still a threat to her.
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">My Review

I have a confession. I didn't read the original book before this one, in fact, I didn't even know it existed. Whoops? Anyways I went into this with just the synopsis and a quick peak at the artwork inside. And I did enjoy this one, but not as much as I had hoped.

The best part of this book had to be the artwork. Carroll's art fit perfectly with the theme of the book. It was soft when it needed to be, and harsh when it called for it. I especially enjoyed Carroll's use of color, or, lack there of. By using greys and whites for her backgrounds, it really pops when she switched to solid black, and made it very impactful. Carroll has a very memorable art style, and I look forward to exploring more of her work.

While the artwork was wonderful, I felt that the story was lacking. While I did enjoy the story, and understood the basics of it, I felt like it needed more. The story needed more detail, more writing, more, everything. Because I understood what the book was aiming for, but it felt incomplete. I wish that I had read the original version before the graphic novel version; would've made the experience more enjoyable.

I did really enjoy seeing and reading about Melinda. I was able to connect with her in certain ways, and not in others. The way she though, some her actions, especially the views she had regarding her family. It was really interesting, actually; I had never seen anyone describe what she wanted with her family the way that she had. Besides for me of course. Melinda was a resilient character. It may not have seemed like it, but she really was. Another reason why I think that this story would be better as a full novel; we would've gotten to see more of Melinda. More of her bravery.

So overall this was an okay graphic novel. While the artwork was stunning, I felt that the story was lacking. I would recommend giving this one a read after reading the novel first. Or if you just want a quick overview of the story, while being able to look at some great art, this one might just be for you.

Hello everybody! I hope that you all had a wonderful week, and ware able to read some good stories. Today my mother and I went on a field trip...to Ikea. There I learned that I'm incredibly out of shape, and that my mom is an aggressive Ikea shopper. Seriously, she had no patience for slow walkers. So, I finally got a new desk! (Well technically it's a bar table but I'm going to be using it as a desk). The desk I have right now is just, not good. There's barely enough room to put my laptop on it. So I'll be able to do all of my work on this new one. Oh, and thank you to my mom (she brought the car that could carry it). Now I just need to put it together... may the odds be ever in my favor, lol.

This was my first week back to my classes after spring break, and it was oddly nice. Usually I dread going back, but I enjoyed being back and getting into the groove of things. I'm getting close to being set to take some classes over the summer, with registration starting later this month. It's almost time, peeps!

It's a three day weekend for me, so I'll be around the interwebs, cleaning, catching up on some work, and (hopefully) setting up my new desk. Feel free to stop by and say hi, and have a great week! :)

Let's discuss the different countries you guys are viewing my blog from. Ladies and gentlemen let's get to talking! Because I recently had a little look at the statistics on my blog, specifically the "Audience" section (this is the section where you can see the different countries your blog has been viewed from). Now, some of the results surprised me. Specifically one country that I'll talk about later. I'll be talking about the statistics for this week, this month, the specific day, and the all time history. Please keep in mind that I'm writing this post on 4/3/18.

Let's talk about the audience I acquired this week (March 27, 2018 - April 3, 2018). Now, the country that I got the most visits from was the United States with 79 page views. Which isn't all that surprising considering that I live in the U.S. Second was Germany with 43 page views, which, honestly did surprise me. I was expecting Canada or Britain. Brazil, the United Kingdom, and Philippines were next; followed by France, Canada, Poland, Russia, and the Ukraine. An interesting line up.

Now the monthly page views weren't all that different. From March 5, 2018 to April 3, 2018 the U.S. remained the country that most viewed my blog. Again, not a huge surprise there. Germany stayed at number two, and everything else was pretty similar to the weekly stats except for the fact that Ireland and Australia were added to the list.

Just today people have visited my blog from America, France, Germany, Canada, and Portugal.

Here's where the shocker comes in, all time blog history. Up at the top was, no surprise, the United States. But, oh man, number two really did surprise me. Three guesses, what do you think it is? I was thinking it would be Canada, or the United Kingdom, or Australia, or I don't know. But I certainly wasn't expecting to see Russia. Hello Russia! How's the weather over there? Also hello to those over in South Korea Turkey, Germany, France, Indonesia. Or should I say Здравствуйте, 여보세요, Merhaba, Hallo, Bonjour, and Halo.

Now, that got me thinking, how do my posts reach all these different people in all of these different countries? How are they being spread? Because I'm not really doing all that much advertising in all honesty. But that's a talk for another time. I want to know what countries visit your blog! Are there any that surprise you? Let me know, and let's discuss....Adventures with a Book Nerdhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03524679741703702882noreply@blogger.com20tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4669542092138726607.post-28314342099459652172018-04-01T06:44:00.000-07:002018-04-01T06:44:08.401-07:00Cover Reveal & Giveaway: Mercy by India R. I'm linking up with Kimberly who blogs at The Caffeinated Book Reviewer for The Sunday Post. The Sunday Post is a weekly meme where all us bloggers talk about out week in reading, what books we got, and what's coming up in the week ahead. I'm also linking up with Book Photo Sundays hosted by Rabbit Ears Book Blog, a weekly meme where we share our favorite photos of the week.

All hail the mighty laptop gods. Ladies and gentlemen, I am in love...with my new laptop. My old laptop was really bad, slow, and in all honesty kinda funky. I never really knew this though until I started playing around with this bad boy. It's a gaming laptop so I'll actually be able to play games on it! I spent a couple hours today getting everything on my new laptop set up just how I want it. But I'll have some good time to play around with it this week considering that it's spring break. I hope that everybody has a good week, and reads some good books! :)

Recently I was thinking back on the different books that I loved growing up. Admittedly, there were a lot, and the more I searched, the more I found. So, I checked some out from my public library. I loved going to the library as a child. It was one of my favorite parts of the week. Every week my mother and I would go to our public library, return the previous week's books, walk around the shelves, and then check out another big stack of books for the week.

While there were a lot of books that I really enjoyed as a child, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie has always been one of my favorites. And, rereading it, I can see why. This book is a lot of fun, and brings back a lot of memories. I usually don't like it when I get library books in, not to pretty condition, but it made me smile to see all of the little smudges and tears in this one. It was a reassurance that this book, this story, is being well loved- like how I loved the copy at my library when I was a kid.

Even coming into this book as an adult, it was fun to read about the little mouse's shenanigans, and the little boy struggling to keep up. The story was very kid like, fun, and almost whimsical in a way. But throughout the whole story was the underline theme of friendship, which was fun to read through the actions of the characters. Numeroff's writing and Bond's illustrations together make a wonderful story that will not only entertain children, but will help put a goofy smile on older readers as well.
Adventures with a Book Nerdhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03524679741703702882noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4669542092138726607.post-71274520748898202052018-03-20T01:30:00.003-07:002018-03-20T01:30:44.676-07:00Chronically Awesome: Why You Don't Want to Lose Weight Like Me

Losing weight is often seen as a good thing. Those who do are often praised, and looked up to. We associate weight loss with happiness, and weight gain with feelings of guilt, and sadness. And it makes sense in a way. We are constantly taking in videos, pictures, and audios of others saying that we will be happier if we lose weight. The result? An obsession with being skinny, even if it means losing the weight in an unhealthy way.

Most doctors and dieticians will recommend losing weight by eating healthy and exercising, but doing this can take a while for the pounds to fall off. A lot of people want a quick, and easy way to lose weight. But I'm not going to be specifically talking about that. Today I will be talking about how people viewed my weight loss, and why you probably don't want to go about it like I did.

Little background, maybe two or three years ago I had to go on a high dose of steroids because I was extremely sick. They worked great, and I felt like a new person overnight. But there is a reason doctors try not to put patients on these types of steroids: they aren't all that great for your body, and the side effects are usually pretty extreme.

Some of the side effects that I had were insomnia, increase in anxiety and depression, some suicidal thoughts, and (what we're focusing on today) weight gain. I was constantly hungry. I would go through two or three bags of grapes (you know the big ones you get at the store?) a week. I was a vegetarian, and had to start eating meat because meat was the only thing that could keep me full for a reasonable amount of time. Needless to say, it was a major change from the little girl who couldn't eat anything. When I finally got off the steroids six or seven months later, I was 180-185 pounds, and 5'4.

I am now 5'5 and 114 pounds. What. The. Fuck. Happened. Here's the thing. I lost a good 90% of the weight in the past year and a half. Along with the fact that I lost it in big chunks from not being able to eat. I would be losing 5-10 pounds a week. I didn't lose the weight through hard work and determination, I lost it through pain and suffering.

One of the most annoying things to be ask is, "What is your weight loss secret? How did you lose all that weight?" Because, in reality, if I told you how I lost the weight, you would run far, far away from my "weight loss secrets." Because my secret? Don't eat. Food is the enemy. I can only give you the very basics on how to lose the weight in a healthy way, but I can spurt off a list from the top of my head on how to suppress hunger triggers, and how to avoid eating.

We naturally gravitate towards quick and easy when it comes to weight loss, but do we really think of what happens when we deprive ourselves of food (which is what a lot of diets suggest you do)? One of the big things I noticed with myself was that I lost all sense of hunger. I could go for very long stretches of time without feeling any hunger at all. I remember having a conversation with my mother, and she told me I should be feeling hungry roughly every four or five hours. I realized after that that the last I had eaten was 17 hours ago.

It took a long time for me to get my hunger back, and it didn't return quickly. I had to set alarms on my phone to remind me to eat. And, whether I wanted to or not, I had to consume something. Sometimes it looked okay, other times it repulsed me. It's hard to eat food on a full stomach, and it's even harder when you know you'll have to eat two more times before you fall asleep.

But I think that the worst thing about it all is how it has changed my view on food. It altered my perception on how much food, was actually a lot. I do not wish for anyone to see food how I do now. When eating 900 calories is considered a lot. When you look at everyhting, and decide what to eat, not based what looks appetizing, but based on what will hurt the least. I do not wish for anybody to see food how I do.

The next time you see someone lose a lot of weight really fast, or in big chunks, know that they might have a chronic illness, or an eating disorder, or another type of mental illness, or something else in their life that's causing trouble. Because losing a lot of weight really fast isn't as desirable as it's cracked up to be. Let's stop associating being skinny and weight loss with happiness. Instead, let's try to associate happiness with healthy habits: exercising, eating more fruits and veggies, taking time to focus on ourselves. Because I wish that I had gotten to lose the weight one of those ways, and it definitely isn't the path that I'm currently stuck on. Let's discuss my problems with new adult books. For those of you who don't know, new adult is almost like the stepping stone between young adult books, and adult books. They are usually aimed for people around 17+, and usually feature characters in college or just getting out of college. Now, NA isn't as well know as young adult, middle grade, or adult books. And, I honestly don't blame people. Because, in my opinion, most of the NA books that are published suck. Here are five of my problems with NA.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">1. I'm drowning in all of the sex
It's very hard to get a NA book published, mainly because it is commonly thought that it won't sell unless there is a lot of sex in it. Which, is really sad. There's a lot of potential for the NA genre, it really does have an audience that want to read about characters their own age, or that are going through the same experiences that they are. But a lot of people (including me) are tired of almost every single NA book being purely erotica. Really unrealistic erotica. Can't we just have a story about a person, who isn't horny and having sex every twenty pages? Please?

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">2. Not for those disgusted by the happiness of others
Something I've noticed about NA is that almost all of it is romance. I think that I have seen one NA series that isn't just contemporary romance (let's give it up for the A Court of Thorns and Roses series!). I'm not claiming to be a expert in NA, but it feels like 95% of the books are contemporary romance. Am I the only one who notices this?

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">3. I'm looking at you, Abbi Glines
Another thing that I noticed is that a lot of the love interests in NA are controlling and sometimes abusive. Which, is not cool! I feel that the whole "perfect guy" that is portrayed is 99% of the time a semi-abusive fuck. Let's start a partition for nicer love interests! I'd be down for that.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">4. My brain has floated away, someone get a net
I've also noticed that a lot of NA plots tend to be very simplistic, usually revolving around the sex or relationship. Which, would be fine, but a lot of these characters aren't developed well. A lot of NA books end up feeling, well, meh. There wasn't anything unique about the story line, the characters weren't developed, and the only memorable thing was the sex (and I usually just remember the sheer amount that characters have sex because good god they must be in great shape).

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">5. Oh look, I guessed the ending again
And here's another point, all of these books feel the same after a while. All the characters, plots, everything becomes the same because a lot of NA books follow similar plot lines. Once you've read three or four NA books, you've pretty much read them all.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Come at me, bitches
Now, those are just some of the issues that I've found with NA books. But, I want you to prove me wrong. What are some of the best NA books out there? Give me some recommendations, and we'll see if you'll be able to change my mind. Do you like NA? What are your problems with it? Let's discuss...

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">My Life

What do you call a student who hasn't read anything in a couple weeks and just switched all of her doctors to a hospital that's between two and five hours away depending on traffic? Anna. You call her Anna. I have had a really, really, really, REALLY crappy past couple weeks. And it started with my dermatologist telling me that I should try a new medicine, but to consult with my GI. He told me that he would probably want the GI to prescribe it. I went and saw my GI. My GI dropped me off of my old medication, and refused to write me any other medicine. And quite honestly, I'm so fucking done with her.

I'm now seeing the majority of my doctors at a teaching hospital where all the doctors are very competent. I've seen two so far and all looks promising. It's kind of nice actually. If I tell them I'm in pain, they order tests to figure out why instead of telling me that I'm just depressed.

So, I've basically read nothing. When not traveling to doctors appointments I was working, or doing something else of the sort. I'm hoping to get a lot posted this month though, especially considering that I didn't get my two discussion posts up last month. So, ladies in gents, have a good week, happy reading, and go do something fun! :)

I got The Wicker King from the library, which is a psychological YA thriller. Then I made a happy little stop at Barnes & Noble to get Every Last Word, and An Ember in the Ashes (I can't be the only one who loves the redesign of the covers, am I?).

A big thank you to Clo over at Book Dragons for nominating me for The Liebster Award!

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">The Rules:

Answer eleven questions that you've been asked.

Nominate eleven other bloggers.

Ask your nominees eleven questions.

Let them know you nominated them.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Clo's Questions:

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">If you could get any two characters from any two books and put them in a relationship/friendship who would they be?
Oh this is a hard question! Ummm, maybe Lola from Lola and the Boy Next Door and Kitty from To All the Boys I've Loved Before. I feel like they would have a lot of fun together.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Favorite song at the moment?

I don't know what my favorite song is, but some songs that I've been listening to a lot are Mind Games by Sickick, Perfume by Annella, and Tell You by Lila & Rat City.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">What’s your spirit animal?

Well, in my soul I believe that my spirit animal is either a hedgehog or the majestic potato. But according to this quiz that Clo linked to, I am apparently a deer. I can see it.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Any advice for people thinking of starting a book blog?

Don't expect great things. I feel like there's this big idea that you start your blog, and make a post, and you suddenly have thousands of readers. And, that isn't true. Sometimes things can happen slowly, and sometimes it can be really hard. It isn't always this beautiful, fun thing that it's made out to be. Sorry to burst your bubble.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">If you had to be the sun or the moon which would you rather be?

I would rather be the moon, mainly because the sun is just a giant ball of fire, and I would rather not be on fire. It sounds painful, and bright.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">A place you want to you go and visit/live for a while?
Everywhere? I feel like it would be so fun to just go to a bunch of different cities, no big plans, and just walk around. I would love to go to London, South Africa, India, Japan, South Korea, and, well, I can't leave out Canada now can I?

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Paperbacks or Hardbacks? Do you have a preference for when you buy books?
When I buy books I usually go for paperback. They're cheaper and I can fit more of them in my bag. But, sometimes I'll get hardcover if the covers are really pretty. Like, I have all of the Throne of Glass books in hardcover because THEY'RE JUST SO PRETTY.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Three things you want people to know about where you live?
Oh, I don't know. Ummm, I honestly have no clue. It's the kind of city where there's a lot of stuff to do at first, but it can get boring after a while. Never go downtown on Tuesday nights, you risk being hit in that stupid roundabout. And it's always prettier at night. I wish that I got to go out in it more.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Other than books, blogging and book related things. What other hobbies/interests do you have?
Well, I love animals, I can sometimes take a decent photograph, and I try to paddle board as much as I can (though the weather has been pretty bad for paddle boarding lately).

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Do you have any advice for people trying to use social media to get more traffic to their blog?
Let me know when you figure it out? lol I guess that my advice would be to put links to your blog everywhere. Twitter, Instagram,Goodreads, where ever you can really. Us humans are curious, and we will follow the links that you give us.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Favorite season and why?
Probably the in-between of fall and winter. The sun is still out, but it's cold enough to snuggle under a bunch of blankets and watch a movie, or read, or take a nap.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">My Questions:

Would you rather be bitten and transformed into a vampire or werewolf?

Would you rather have angel or fairy wings?

If you could meet any book character, who would you meet and why?

If you could change one thing about your blog, what would you change and why?

What is one thing you wish you knew before you started blogging?

If you could only listen to one album for the rest of your life, which album would you choose and why.

If you could be friends with one author, who would you be friends with and why?

Who are your three favorite literary characters?

What are your three favorite quotes?

If you could shape shift into any animal, which animal would you choose?

If you could have any blogger guest post on your blog, who would you choose and why?

I think that my favorite season for reading is winter. I don't know man! I guess that I just like to cuddle with my dog under a blanket and read a good book.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">What book have you read that completely took you by surprise?

Serenity by India R. Adams really surprised me! I remember that I was really unsure going into it the first time, and I was just blow away. Maybe it was by all the tears I cried or the tissues I went through, but it ended up being on of my favorite books.

I don't ever really read any nonfiction for fun. The only time I ever really read it is for classes.

Fairy! I would choose fairy because, well, I think that it would be awesome to be one! And I also like how diverse they can be. They have different emotions, looks, lands, ruling systems, it's hard to get bored with a story about fairies. They may look cute and friendly, but they will seriously hurt you if you make them mad.

I can't really remember a specific book that got me hooked on reading. But, two of the books that got me into YA would have to be Twilight and Divergent.

I like reading about a lot of different characters, but all of my favorite characters are flawed in one way or another. It isn't fun to read about a character that is perfect in every way, so it's important that all characters be flawed in one way or another. But, I also really like the characters that aren't like me. Which is most of them. I'm a boring person, and I wouldn't be very fun to read about. 😂

I don't read books based on the seasons. I mainly just read books based on my mood, lol.

This is a good question! Ummmm, probably Twilight. Because the fantasy, and story lines were pretty cool, but goddamn Edward. 😂 Why you gotta be so fucking creepy? 😂

I really like animals, so I guess that that could be a hobby. Um, I like to take photos, and, does eating count as a hobby? Oh wait, how did I forget paddle boarding? 😂 Okay, I think that's it, lol.
Oooooo, this is an interesting question! So, the first book that I choose is Serenity by India R. Adams, and the characters that I'll choose are Josh, Rocco, and Dereck. And, in all honesty, the only song that I can think of for them is that one song from High School Musical, The Boys are Back. Then I realized that the song also worked for Rhysand, Cassian, and Az from A Court of Mist and Fury. And it ALSO worked for Henry, Jonny, and Butch from Blood Brothers! A very versatile song that one is.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Do you like predictable contemporary books? Why/Why not?

I mean, does anybody really like predictable books? The only time I really read those kinds of books is when I don't feel good, or I feel lonely (because most predictable contemporary books are romance). They can be fun, but I can't read them all the time.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">

I am most definitely an introvert. There is not a doubt in my mind that I'm an introvert. 😂

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Five things you want to do/accomplish before you die and get to read forever in the afterlife.

Wait, so you're saying that when I die I get to just, read?! Hell ya! Sign me up! Who cares about this life, I wanna start reading! All jokes aside, I really don't know what I would want to do. I can just hope that it would be something that makes me happy.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">If you could have a conversation with any
author and they’d listen to you and take your advice etc on board, who
would it be and what would you tell them?

Hmmmmmmm, maybe Abbi Glines? I would tell her to stop making her love interests abusive fucks, lol.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Candles, yay or nay?

Nay for me. I've never really been a big fan of them. I'm always scared that I'm going to burn my house down.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Biggest pet peeve within reading?

That's a good question! I don't really have a lot of pet peeves in reading/the books that I read, but one of them has to be when an abusive character is made out to be the "perfect guy." *swoons* Like, fuck no. 😂 Like, if the MC ends up leaving them then I'm cool with it, but otherwise it's awful and causes me to worry about the people around them. And they're not even real. I'm such a mom. 😂

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Averaging it out how many books do you own?

I would tell you, but then I'd have to kill you. No but in all seriousness I have more than I should. I have approximately 175 on my Kindle, and I don't even want to take a guess at how many physical books I own. 😂

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">What do you wish you knew about book blogging at the start?

I wish that I had known that it would get easier the more I blogged. It's really tough to start out blogging! You have to choose which platform you're going to go through, learn how to write/format posts, make graphics, not use any pictures that are copyrighted, and even scarier, you have to learn how to put yourself out there. Because it can be hard to be seen at first. And it's hard to keep writing when it feels like nobody sees you.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Have you got any goals for your blog this year?

I think that the only goal I have for this year for the blog is to not stress about it as much. It's fine if something doesn't go up when I want it to, it's okay if there's a typo, it's okay if I get up one morning and decide that I want to change everything. I'm not doing this to make other people happy, I'm doing it to make ME happy. And I honestly don't care if that sounds selfish.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Do you ready everyday?

I really wish that I did! But, no, usually there is something that keeps me from reading the books that I want to everyday. 😢

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">

Synopsis: Waking up in Vegas was never meant to be like this.

Evelyn Thomas's plans for celebrating her twenty-first birthday in Las Vegas were big. Huge. But she sure never meant to wake up on the bathroom floor with a hangover to rival the black plague, a very attractive half-naked tattooed man in her room, and a diamond on her finger large enough to scare King Kong. Now if she could just remember how it all happened.

One thing is certain, being married to one of the hottest rock stars on the planet is sure to be a wild ride.

My Review

I'm going to be honest with you guys, I don't actually remember a lot about this one. But I'm actually kind of glad about it?? Because I gotta tell you, this was boring as fuck. Well, no. Fucking is more interesting than this one. I'm serious. Like, I'm going to need someone to erase this one from my memory.

I mean, the main problem with this one was our main characters. I would compare them to two pieces of cardboard, but that would be offensive for the cardboard. Seriously, I couldn't picture them, like, at all. They lacked any development, and were so bland that the only thing I could picture was two blank blobs kissing each other.

The problem with the rest of the book was that it relied solely on the characters, and you all know how I felt about those. The story was about the instant love of two bland characters. There was no action besides the guy being a stalker, and some punches thrown. The odd part was that the beginning of the story was super slow, and the MC's relationship was going at 100 mph despite this.

Now, this all would have been better if the writing was good, but it was really just sub-par at best. I mean, the whole reason I picked this one up was because I was told that this was the best NA book out there. You wanna see what NA can be like? Read this one. And, all things considered, I may just be an outlier. A lot of people really liked this one. But the disappointment made this one even worse for me.

So overall I really, really, really didn't like this one. With badly devolved characters and very little plot, I'm sad that this is the best that NA has to offer.

MY LIFE

Hello there, everybody! It's been two weeks sense I posted one of these, and I blame the stomach flu. Because I think that's one of the things that took me out these past two weeks. But, I'm feeling a lot better now, and I'm hoping to get back into the blogging groove.

That being said, I wanted to thank everybody who commented on and shared by discussion post on why we don't see more chronically ill MCs in YA literature. I've really enjoyed reading your comments, and seeing what you guys thought.

Oooo, I'm also giving up gluten! It's supposed to have really helped a lot of people with some of the same problems that I have, so I'm going to give it a try. So far, it isn't really that hard. I wasn't eating a lot of gluten before anyways. I literally just went to Whole Foods and got some rice pasta and a loaf of gluten free bread and I was all set. 😂

So, I hope that everybody has a good week, and enjoys some good books! :)

-MY REVIEW-

I have a confession. I was actually really scared going into this one. I'm not even sure exactly why; maybe it was just the fear I have when starting almost every book that is second in a series. Will it compare to the first book? Will the characters stay true to who they are? Will the book just overall be sloppier? These are all thoughts I face every time I pick up the second book in a series, and these were still the thoughts I faced when I picked up this one (which was written by one of my favorite authors, keep in mind). So, were my worries well deserved? Did River succumb to the "second book syndrome?" I'm happy to report that it did not.

It took me a while to articulate what I wanted to talk about in my review because, not many people know this, but I actually start writing my reviews in my head as I'm reading. From the very first word I'm planning, thinking, ranting, articulating what I want to say-what I want to describe- about a book. Now, being honest, I wrote at least three different reviews as I read this one. I though I had a good one, then Adams would throw something into the story and I would have to start all over. So, Adams, I applaud you for your magnificent story telling. There were so many twists and turns that at the end of the book I (I'm not exaggerating) threw my kindle onto the bed, muttered "no author should be this brilliant" and proceeded to fall off my bed head first. What? It was a really good twist! So, the adventurer part of my brain loved this one, the reviewer part did not, lol.

Adams's writing has always been a sort of comfort for me. Maybe it is because I read my first book by her, Serenity, at a time that I really needed it. But the best simile that I can come up with is that reading Adams's work is like reading out of a story book when you were little. All of the images pop into your head. The feeling of awe, of wonder, of safety, all encompassed into the pages of a book. It's a pretty amazing experience, and Adams's writing will always have to be one of my favorite parts of her books.

But, the reality is, I didn't give this five stars. Why, Anna? Why? Well, there are two main reasons. The first being that I thought that the beginning of the book was a little too slow for me personally. I understand you have to reintroduce concepts and all the fantasy vocabulary, but it just felt, slow to me. Maybe it's because I had already actually read the beginning part, maybe it's just me.

I think that the saddest part of this one for me though was the character development. Don't get me wrong, there was character development, it's how certain characters developed throughout this book that disappointed me. I found that certain characters were making decisions that really disappointed me. I ended up losing my trust in characters that I loved in book one, which, really saddened me. My disappointment ended up sort of changing how I viewed the rest of the book, which was disappointing.

While I ended up losing my connection to certain characters, I ended up really liking others. I found it odd that my favorite character of the book was King, but I knew that I was lost as soon as he started talking about the mix of good and bad.

"W-Why are you so cruel?'

'Am I? Or am I simply the balance so beautiful wonderful bliss can exist?'"

Is it fate that King was talking about the exact subject I was debating myself about just that morning? Nope. But that odd little coincidence did make me immediately like King. I mean, how could I not? He was one of the smartest, well thought out villains I have ever had the pleasure of reading. He wasn't good, and he wasn't bad. I loved how Adams was able to show these amazing life lessons, through this flawed character that was more human to me through his actions than almost any other character in the book. He was a messed up creature, but at the end of the day he only longed for what we all want, to feel loved. Only a perfect blend of good and evil could create such a villain, and I'm grateful that I got to see his true colors shine through in this story.

So overall this was a wonderful continuation to the A Stranger in the Woods series. Adams was able to keep her charming voice while continuing the story line to where it needed to go. While I was a little disappointing in some characters (one in particular actually), and it started off a tad bit slow, this story was filled to the brim with twists and revelations. I'm extremely interested and eager to see where Adams propels the story next.

Let's discuss why we don't see more chronically ill main characters in literature, specifically young adult literature. I don't know exactly when I started to notice the lack of chronically ill MCs, but I did, and now I can't stop seeing it. In fact, it was one of the inspirations for me starting one of my new series, Chronically Awesome.

Now, I don't mean to say that you won't see them at all, just that you'll only see them in contemporary romance. Which, again, isn't bad. But, they all seem to follow a similar story line: the parents were lying and the MC isn't actually chronically ill; the MC gets a boyfriend and everything gets better!; through there is always the classic, the MC dies. I mean, this is kind of insulting. Is this what authors think our lives are like? 😂

I feel like the chronically ill have been left behind. I mean, we had the whole #WeNeedDiverseBooks movement, and it did amazing things. But one thing that I criticized about it was that it targeted two very specific groups: mental health, and and more MCs that were POC. Which, again, is great. But it wish that more awareness had been brought to other areas as well, like people with chronic illnesses, or people on the autism spectrum.

I mean, we are pretty awesome (hence the title, Chronically Awesome). Do you know how many twists you could put in books? Imagine the classic zombie survival book, but the MC has Type 1 diabetes. Not only do they need to fight off zombies, find food, find shelter, and navigate the new world, but they have to find insulin, be able to correct their blood sugar, and charge up any medical devices that they need. It adds a completely new aspect! Or, an alien invasion novel! Where the MC has to save the world, but also has celiac disease, and has to make sure that they don't consume any gluten.

I have only heard of three books that featured a chronically ill MC or a MC that's on the autism spectrum, and that weren't contemporary romance, and that didn't end with one of those three endings. And, in all honesty, this is kind of sad. I mean, we're always talking about how everyone deserves to see themselves in the pages of the book, so why aren't we giving kids with chronic illnesses a character to look up to? So, come on authors! Let's do better, let's do some writing, let's discuss. It's been a while since I read a book that I connected to, that I loved, that I read in less than a day. This book was exactly what I needed right now. Not only did it make me think about real issues that are happening today, but it gave me a new perspective on the people who are living the lives like those in this book.

My favorite part of this book had to be our main characters, Jakub and Lincoln. Jakub is the son of a Polish immigrant, who moved to Canada with his late wife to try and live a better life. Jakub is a deeply constructed character. He lives with his father in the only apartment his father can afford. It was interesting to watch Jakub develop through the book. Especially when it came to how he thought about his friendship with Lincoln. Lincoln and Jakub had been friends for as long as they could remember. It was really interesting to see Lincoln change from when his brother got home, to him getting involved in the Red Bloodz, the local gang his brother runs. Both of these characters were so real, and very complex. Their reactions were real and human. They were, quite literally, the kids from across the street.

And I think that that was one of the big things about this book, this really does happen. The people who are being pulled into gangs sit next to your daughter in school, are the kids down the street who are "just little trouble makers." I feel like when we talk about people who are in gangs, we talk about them as if they are not actually people, and they are.

Another really mentionable aspect of this book was the atmosphere Nelson was able to create. Nelson was so descriptive when creating the setting and all the people that showed up throughout the story. I was picturing everything that was happening in my head as I was reading, and it was awesome to have her very well put together writing to help propel the story along.

So overall I'm not doing this story justice. This was a wonderfully written story with a heart breaking story line, and amazingly developed characters. This is the type of book that everyone should read at least one; not only because it shows the heart breaking reality of who is involved with gangs, but because it also shows the horrifying ending that a lot of these people face.
Hello, hello, hello! I hope that everyone is having a fantastic week. I was tagged by the wonderful Kristina over at Books-and-Dachshunds to do this tag. So, without further ado, The New Year Book Tag!

1.) Are there any books you started in 2017 that you still need to finish?

Almost every book I am currently reading I started in 2017. So, I'm either going to be trying to finish them, or DNF them. It will be nice to have that shelf on Goodreads look more manageable. 😂

2.) Do you have an Autumnal Book to transition to the End/Beginning of the New Year?

I have to agree with Kristina and say that I don't really read books with the seasons. Sometimes I'll read a wintry/Holiday book in December, but that's really it. I'm more of a mood reader, so I have a hard time reading books that go with the seasons. I just read whatever I'm in the mood for.

3.) Is there a new release you're still waiting for from 2017?

I was awful about reading new releases in 2017. So, there are a lot I want to read in 2018. It works out especially well for me because now they'll count for the Beat the Backlist challenge. 😄

4.) What are three books you want to read before the end of 2018?

Ooooo, this is a good question! I think that I want to finish A Court of Wings and Ruin, I want to read River when it comes out, and I also want to read Geekerella.

5.) Have you already made reading plans for 2018?

Yes I have! I set my Goodreads reading challenge at 60 books this year, and I'm also participating in a few other challenges. You can read my 2018 Challenge Sign Up Post to find out more about them. 😊

6.) Who do you tag?

I'll tag Greg @Book Haven, Lefty @The Left-Handed Book Lover, and Sarah @Brainfluff. Oh, and if you want to give this one a try, feel free! :)

MY LIFE

Hi, everybody! It's been a surprisingly good week. I was sick for most of it (only made it to classes on Monday), but it was still a pretty good week. I made good progress in Ocarina of Time, and I read two books and DNFed one! I read more this week than I did in December. Oh and I went to the library today! I went for a couple cook books, and left with eleven books (none of them cookbooks). Oops? Well, here's to a better week, where we actually get the things we need!

I started off the week DNFing Curse of Stars. It was definitely time. Then I read Lick, and it was absolutely terrible! Expect a rant review soon. Then I read Blood Brothers, and it was fabulous. It was such a strong, powerful read. I'm currently writing this review, so expect this one soon. :)
